Win 7 shouldn't have caused any particular issues like that, because when you connect a Win 8+ HDD configured with Secureboot to a Win 7 device without Secureboot, the latter cannot even read the drive (it gets denied permission to see anything past that there is a drive connected). This is the intended function for that feature, which is both kind of sweet, and a little annoying now and again >.<. The issue you ran into when connecting your Windows 8 HDD to a Win 7 device is caused by Secureboot (you can see the drive, but cannot browse it or anything at best).
